The USB interface has come a long way from its origins in the RS-232 protocol to the high-speed multi-device connection of USB 4. Despite these advancements, many mainstream server/player-to-DAC interfaces still use USB 2.0 due to its reliability and cross-platform support. Newer chipsets also eliminate the need for special drivers for USB 2.0 in Windows, macOS, and Linux.

The ION USB is a carefully designed cable system that minimizes dropped packets. It consists of two inner components a data bus and a power bus.   Each is shielded internally to decrease false detection by the USB receiver, with a directional ground network to establish a dedicated signal reference ground.
